Seller refunds — do they reduce expenses?

Question from our Discord (anonymized):

I returned shoes and got a refund to my card. In the report it looked like additional income.

Answer
Not anymore. Refunds from sellers and tax refunds reduce expenses in the category where the original purchase was made, instead of being added to income. Shoes for 300 PLN and a 300 PLN refund result in zero in the Clothing category, not “+300 income, −300 expense”.

How Martia recognizes this: by seller, amount, and time elapsed since purchase, and for tax refunds — by sender. Uncertain cases are marked and you can review or correct them: in questions before the report, there’s now a separate “Refund” answer option.

If the refund came to a different account than the purchase (e.g., bought with a card, refund by transfer), recognition is harder — mark it manually as a refund, and Martia will remember this pattern.
