Financial rhythm — recurring bills and reminders

Every month has a financial rhythm: rent, utilities, subscriptions, social contributions, taxes, loan repayments and credit card bills. Every year has one too: car insurance, home insurance and taxes on different properties.

Today, we keep far too many of those dates in our heads. I’d like Martia to help take that mental load off our shoulders.

“Financial rhythm” is an idea for discussion. The feature is not available yet, and there is no release date.

Martia suggests, you confirm

Martia could spot recurring bills in your transaction history and suggest an initial setup:

“I can see rent payments in each of the last three months, usually near the start of the month. Would you like to add rent to your financial rhythm?”

Each suggestion would show the transactions behind it, how often the bill seems to recur and the expected amount. You could edit, confirm or dismiss it. When there isn’t enough history — especially for annual payments — Martia should ask. You could also add an obligation yourself if it hasn’t appeared in your history yet.

Your monthly and yearly rhythm

One place could show:

  • monthly bills: rent, utilities, subscriptions, social contributions, taxes, loan repayments and credit card bills;
  • quarterly, annual and other recurring obligations, such as car and home insurance;
  • separate entries for different properties, loans or insurance policies;
  • upcoming bills and the months when larger annual costs come around.

Reminders on your terms

Once you’ve confirmed your rhythm, Martia would ask which bills you’d like reminders for and how far in advance. Reminders would be off by default. Bills collected automatically could stay visible in your rhythm without extra notifications. You would stay in control of the settings, including pausing or turning reminders off.

One distinction matters: the date you made a payment is not necessarily its due date. You need to confirm the due date; Martia should not infer statutory tax deadlines from bank history. A variable amount is an estimate. If Martia cannot find a transaction, that means “I can’t see a payment”, not that a bill is definitely unpaid. This idea is about planning and reminders, without automatically making payments.

A sketch of the idea

A concept board with fictional amounts and dates: conversation → review and confirmation → monthly and yearly rhythm. It illustrates the direction, rather than a finished screen design.

Which bills are hardest to keep track of? And what would be more useful: a short summary of the week ahead, or a reminder before each bill you choose?
